Is a college education worth the price? This is a question more Americans are askingas college costs continue rising and the jobmarket remains weak.

Attending a four-year college in the UnitedStates can cost more than $40,000 a year. Thatinformation comes from the College Board, aprivate company. Many people with a collegeeducation are drowning in student debt. Theyhad to borrow money to finance their education.

A recent study suggests that a collegeeducation is worth it, at least in the UnitedStates. That information comes from theHamilton Project at the Brookings Institution.

The study found that someone with a4-year college education earns twice as muchas a high school graduate over a lifetime. Andfor nearly all study programs, an individual witha 4-year bachelor"s degree earns even morethan someone with a two-year degree.

But not all college majors have a guaranteeof good wages. For example, a chemicalengineer can expect to earn double the earningsof a social worker over a lifetime. On average,a finance graduate makes more than a nurse ormedical aide, while the nurse makes more thanan elementary school teacher.

Generally, college majors that require skillsin mathematics have high lifetime earnings.Graduates in computer science, engineering, and physics have the highest wages. Majorsthat involve teaching children or counselinghave the lowest pay.

Actually, graduates with bachelor"s degreesin some fields earn even less than people with a2-year associate"s degrees over a lifetime. Theyinclude early childhood education, elementaryeducation, and social work.

The study did not explore the earnings ofpeople with master"s degrees or doctorates.

Brad Hershbein helped to direct the study. He said the research includes immigrantswho graduated from American and foreignuniversities. He added that, "We don"t try todistinguish how things would be different basedon where the education was completed."

The Hamilton Project noted that futureearnings should not be the only reason forchoosing a college major. It says, "Personalenjoyment, engaging in meaningful work, andfilling a social need should also enter into astudent"s decision-making." The numbers areonly averages and there are many exceptions.

Most students have little knowledge of whattheir future eaming will be when they choose a major.Study organizers hope the report will help studentsmake better decisions about higher education. Intheir words, "College degrees may not be guaranteeof higher income, but they come closer than justabout any other investment one can make."
